The ever-popular song “White Christmas” was written by Irving Berlin for the 1942 musical film Holiday Inn. When Bing Crosby introduced it, the song dominated the Billboard chart for 11 weeks and returned to the top position again in December 1943 and 1944.

A major reason White Christmas gained such massive popularity was that it painted a wonderfully peaceful Christmas setting during wartime. The song reminisces about an old-fashioned holiday scene—snow-covered evergreens, children playing outside, and the sound of sleigh bells ringing through the air. In White Christmas, Irving Berlin created a perfect sanctuary where people of all faiths could escape the turmoil of war and celebrate a season of family and togetherness.

As we reflect on Christmas and pray for peace in our lives and in the world, let us ask ourselves a difficult question: “Is there truly a perfect sanctuary of peace apart from Jesus?”

People often ask me whether a Christian musician can play secular music. I believe the answer is a resounding YES. God, in His infinite wisdom and grace, has redeemed us through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ and will redeem our work to bring Him glory.

Brian’s rendition of White Christmas is playful yet heartfelt—sensitive but never overly sentimental. As we enjoy this wonderful music, let us share the message of peace with those around us, so that “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)
